In a sane world, Owens would have been forever discredited after her praise of Nazis from 1933 to the invasion of Poland but here we are.

A few days ago, I shared a video of a woman that threatened to call ICE on the owners of a taco truck that was operating in her neighborhood.

In response community members brought a mariachi band in front of her home.

It is a tricky issue, but I think the best way to talk about it is to try and tap into the aspirational part of our national psyche. The fact is, especially when the economy is good, most people don’t prioritize immigration - Americans, after all, are already here, so they don’t need to worry about coming here. When the economy is going bad, they care but only in a “deytukurjerbs” kind of way. I’m somewhat surprised that Trump’s attack on asylum seekers hasn’t cost him in Florida. But then I’ve also seen enough data to suggest that Cuban Americans split similar to the rest of us - older/whiter more likely to be Republican, younger/less white more likely to not be Republican; and second/third generation Cubans tend to be much less stubborn on Cuba policy, which probably translates to other areas of policy.

Well, to be fair, there are other “sins” that can see a Republican forced to drop out/resign. It’s just generally that the bar is far lower, as they don’t face almost universal demand from the moment they’re found out to resign “for the good of the party.”

The short list is:

- Homosexuality
- Abortion
- Apologizing

You can have drug-fueled sex orgies with multiple partners of various ages, but so long as none of them are of the same sex, had a pregnancy that you tried to abort, and you take no responsibility for your actions…then you’ll stay in office. What’s more, you can use taxpayer money to pay people off and then act as though those same taxpayers are insane if they demand you repay the money.

Problem is, we have a lot of employers in America who have no interest in immigration reform, they like having a large pool of cheap and easily exploited labor that they can tap into to keep costs down.

We have a patchwork of laws and initiatives that do little but kick the overall issues down the road or move them into someone else’s jurisdiction. It is a national problem that has to be approached and implemented at a national level, not just border states.

Still remember reading articles from a few years back about how second and third-gen Cuban-Americans have only the stories of their parents and grandparents about what the country was like before Castro. That it’s the older generations that are really holding onto this belief that one day they’ll be able to “go back home” and lay claim to what’s “theirs” with old deeds and stock certificates.

It is a national problem that has to be approached and implemented at a national level, not just border states.

this ‘problem’ could have been addressed years ago from the payroll/employer side

no one wants to enforce it

Why exactly is the U.S. so hard on Cuba? It can’t be because it is a communist country since China has favored trading status with our country. Plus, the entire GOP seems to be under the sway of Putin who is as neo-Communist as can be.

I think it is a play to the older folks that watch Fox. They all remember the Cuban missile crisis and probably still hold all of that against Cuba. Republicans love to hold onto hate. It keeps the party warm at night.

absolutely

i was talking from the governmental side
federal, state, city/local jurisdictions all do payroll audits for compliance
this would be an easy add on

mind you im not exactly for it. only that from a logistics point of view, the mechanism is already there

Historically, it’s because Cuba refused to be part of the US, after they helped us to kick out the Spanish. It holds major strategic importance to the gulf, which is why we have kept a base there. And otherwise, a lot of Cubans in Florida have a lot of political influence.

cuban emigres have always had an advantage - even the undocumented ones
they are assumed to be political refugees
that means automatic access to the refugee system

so they’re not rounded up and booted out on a regular basis while they are deporting others who have lived here 30, 40 years and more

There’s definitely a generational divide. FIU does a poll of Cuban Americans (in Miami) every year. From the one released in January:

57% of Cuban Americans say the embargo hasn’t worked at all, including 65% of those over 75 years old. 60% of Cubans that came before 1980 say it hasn’t worked. Yet on the question of whether they support the embargo, “yes” wins 51-49. Almost 70% of those who came before 1980 and 73% of those over the age of 75 (likely a lot of cross over there, for what it’s worth). Still support the embargo. Those born mostly in the US oppose it 60-40.

That generational gap is real across every question that is asked.

One thing that might help is the Democratic nominee winning statewide in some states where Republican held Senate seats are up in 2022… oh, hi Marco Rubio.

re: #172 piratedan

still, its a vision and a plan, more of a reinvestment in America instead of selling it off to the wealthy piecemeal…

To be fair, I would much rather talk about ideas to fix things rather than watching the usual horse-race shit and worryiong about what the GOP is going to do when we already KNOW what the GOP is going to do… they’re going to lie, obfuscate, delay and cheat… in order to protect those that they serve… they’re awesome lackeys, but in order to get people to buy into change, you HAVE to tell them what you want to change, which causes them to think about what THEY want to change, it starts becoming possible once you imagine that change itself is possible…

Which is one of the reasons we have president Clinton. //

Part of the point of 2016 was that some people don’t like change.

Now, I don’t want someone that is just lofty, but the president has to convince people to want what he or she is pushing, not just try to implement it. It’s easier when it’s something they want, but we’ve got to convince people to want to do something about climate change, health care, the way income is distributed, and reform government so that what Trump is doing can’t happen again, and we will have to do it with enough popular opinion to push it through the courts.

To them anyone in a robe is a Muslim. A clearer version of the video seems to show an emergency worker in a hard hat and protective clothing. It seems to have occurred to just ONE freeper that certain other guys in robes are frequently found around cathedrals without necessarily being Muslim arsonists.

The freeperati also seemed to have latched onto a claim that it took the Paris Fire Brigade either an hour or two hours to respond to the fire. This originated at some Macedonian fake news site. I think we were seeing video here something like 25 minutes after the fire was first noticed.

A rotary engine, used in the early days of aviation, worked the same way except that the crankshaft was fixed and the engine, with the propellor attached, spun around it.

My friend Harvey, who had been a pilot for 40 years, had the idea that ALL round engines were rotaries and spun away at gigantic velocities. I was incredulous that he could think this about, say, a Pratt & Whitney R-4360 (28 cylinders, 70+ liters and about 3500 pounds) but I had to remind myself that relatively few people nowadays, even pilots, have been around things like this.

Fat man or little boy, the displaced passenger wouldn’t even have to be very large for a fairly high yield weapon to be substituted.

Cool genealogy story though. An Irish lady who lives near where I have roots in County Mayo took some photographs of the headstones of a few people who were my second great grandfather’s cousins. I find myself wondering if any of my family on that side stayed in touch with anyone. My second grandfather was a small child during the Potato Famine years when he, his mother, and two younger brothers left Connemara for the US. I’d love to have a photograph of them but haven’t found one if one exists.

Saw a few minutes of the panel on Chris Matthews. Zerlina Maxwell is everything Andrew Sullivan despises: a woman and an African-American. He is so certain of his superiority. Of course, it’s not just African-Americans that he believes are inferior — it’s obviously anyone with a brown skin. He really is threatened by immigrants from south of the border and is confident that no civilization can be superior to that of white Europeans. If he weren’t gay, I am sure he would have been a committed Trumpster.
