I just disagree with his approach to “reform”

It is a tricky issue, but I think the best way to talk about it is to try and tap into the aspirational part of our national psyche. The fact is, especially when the economy is good, most people don’t prioritize immigration - Americans, after all, are already here, so they don’t need to worry about coming here. When the economy is going bad, they care but only in a “deytukurjerbs” kind of way. But if you can tap into that idea that people are coming here to live better lives, and that their presence in turn makes our lives better… you’ve got a chance.

I’m somewhat surprised that Trump’s attack on asylum seekers hasn’t cost him in Florida. But then I’ve also seen enough data to suggest that Cuban Americans split similar to the rest of us - older/whiter more likely to be Republican, younger/less white more likely to not be Republican; and second/third generation Cubans tend to be much less stubborn on Cuba policy, which probably translates to other areas of policy.

There’s a segment of American FP pundits who want to punish Cuba and try to restore American companies to their assets that they lost in the Cuban revolution. They think that they deserve this. And Trump is big on pushing winner/loser narratives, even if he doesn’t have the first clue about any of it.

Cuba would be a huge economic opportunity for the US, but Trump and his know nothing base think that keeping Cuba at arms length is somehow good.

Still remember reading articles from a few years back about how second and third-gen Cuban-Americans have only the stories of their parents and grandparents about what the country was like before Castro. That it’s the older generations that are really holding onto this belief that one day they’ll be able to “go back home” and lay claim to what’s “theirs” with old deeds and stock certificates.

Part of the point of 2016 was that some people don’t like change.

Now, I don’t want someone that is just lofty, but the president has to convince people to want what he or she is pushing, not just try to implement it. To them anyone in a robe is a Muslim. A clearer version of the video seems to show an emergency worker in a hard hat and protective clothing. It seems to have occurred to just ONE freeper that certain other guys in robes are frequently found around cathedrals without necessarily being Muslim arsonists.

The freeperati also seemed to have latched onto a claim that it took the Paris Fire Brigade either an hour or two hours to respond to the fire. This originated at some Macedonian fake news site. I think we were seeing video here something like 25 minutes after the fire was first noticed.

A rotary engine, used in the early days of aviation, worked the same way except that the crankshaft was fixed and the engine, with the propellor attached, spun around it.

My friend Harvey, who had been a pilot for 40 years, had the idea that ALL round engines were rotaries and spun away at gigantic velocities. I was incredulous that he could think this about, say, a Pratt & Whitney R-4360 (28 cylinders, 70+ liters and about 3500 pounds) but I had to remind myself that relatively few people nowadays, even pilots, have been around things like this.

Cool genealogy story though. An Irish lady who lives near where I have roots in County Mayo took some photographs of the headstones of a few people who were my second great grandfather’s cousins. I find myself wondering if any of my family on that side stayed in touch with anyone. My second grandfather was a small child during the Potato Famine years when he, his mother, and two younger brothers left Connemara for the US. I’d love to have a photograph of them but haven’t found one if one exists.

My how times change. I can’t even imagine the horriffic battles that would have happened if my school in a liberal University town had tried a play like that in my senior year (1982). Good movie so I imagine the play is good too.
